Need a speaker for your club, church, or other organization?
Five members of CAAV have presentations about climate change that they are prepared to give to organizations in the Valley.
In addition, we have two speakers offering to present about local Solarize projects. Find more about Joy Loving and Sandy Greene here.
Dr. Les Grady’s talk is entitled Why the Need for Action on Climate Change Is Urgent. After presenting the evidence that Earth’s temperature depends on the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, Dr. Grady contrasts the amount of fossil fuel owned by companies and countries with the amount that can be burned without catastrophic climate change. He then discusses the implications of that difference to the economy and the environment. A printable flyer with more about Les and his talk is here.
Dr. Dave Pruett’s talk is entitled Perspectives on Climate Change: Scientific, Economic, and Moral. After giving a computational scientist’s “insider” perspective on the climate problem, Dr. Pruett will briefly discuss why green technologies make good economic sense and why communities of faith are starting to rally around climate initiatives.
Mr. Bishop Dansby’s talk is entitled Climate Change: How We Transition to a Sustainable Economy. It is one offering of the Climate Reality Project and focuses on the need to move away from fossil fuels and toward a more sustainable energy economy.
April Moore is a climate activist, organizer, and author, who lives in Shenandoah County. She talks to seniors, students, and other community groups about why climate change is the biggest threat facing humanity. In plain, everyday language, she helps people to understand how the climate crisis came to be, and what we, as individuals and as a nation, can and must do to help ensure a livable world for our children and grandchildren.
Alleyn Harned can provide comments on the subject of our energy, economic, and
environmental challenges of our dependence on oil for transportation fuel. He can cover ways individuals and businesses can save money and reduce their emissions impact. He can also provide detailed information for businesses transitioning off oil and onto climate friendly reduced carbon fuels.
The length of the talks can be tailored to meet the needs of your organization.
Dr. Grady taught environmental engineering at Clemson University in South Carolina until his retirement in 2003. Since then he has devoted much of his time to the study of climate science and the question of global warming.
Dr. Pruett recently retired from teaching mathematics at James Madison University. In addition, he has a decade’s worth of scientific experience at NASA Langley Research Center and has been recognized for pioneering work in the area of computational fluid dynamics. He is the author of Reason and Wonder: A Copernican Revolution in Science and Spirit.
Mr. Dansby, who holds degrees in engineering and law, practiced law in Florida and Virginia, with an emphasis on product liability and toxic torts. He did seminal work in land records modernization, and was founder and CEO of American Cadastre, Inc. (AmCad).
April is Fundraising Chair for Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, and she also raises funds to address climate change. She is active with the Climate Action Alliance of the Valley, and she is a certified Master Naturalist. Her website, TheEarthConnection.org, offers nourishment and inspiration to people who love the earth. A WMRA interview with her can be found here.
Alleyn Harned is the Executive Director of Virginia Clean Cities (VCC), a member of the U.S. Department of Energy-affiliated Clean Cities Coalitions program. Alleyn joined Clean Cities in 2009, the same year Virginia Clean Cities, Inc., formed a partnership with James Madison University. That partnership allows Clean Cities and the university in Harrisonburg, Va., to work together to leverage resources, support alternative fuel initiatives and pursue opportunities to decrease pollution and reduce dependence on foreign oil.
